Lee Family Cemetery
Woodland, Northampton County, North Carolina, USA
The cemetery was on property owned by John Thomas Atkinson, who indicated in his will written February 13, 1879 and probated November 22, 1880, that he was leaving his land to his heirs "...except the Burying grounds containing a half acre of land which I reserve as a Burying Place for the Family." A map of the division of this land is recorded in Deed Book 76 page 103. There are 3 grave markers in the front section for Joseph Askew, Mary Eliza Atkinson Askew Johnson and George T Johnson all surrounded by a large cement slab.
After a period of time the land was purchased by James Lee and his wife Brodger Lee, Deed Book 122 page 289 March 8, 1904. According to Althea Lee Everette, a dau of James & Brodger, her father maintained the cemetery until he was unable and then his son took on the responsibility of maintaining the land. The second Mr Lee's daughter Denise, was maintaining the cemetery when I spoke with her and her aunt in July 2003. When Althea was young, she remembered there being grave houses in the cemetery, but doesn't remember if there were ever any markers with names of the individuals buried there.
After a period of time, the Lee family began burying their loved ones (looking at the cemetery from the road) in the far right corner. There are eight markers in the Lee family section as of Spring 2012.
