LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
April 20, 1965 Editor, Highland Recorder Dear Sir: Last fall, Cecil, James and William Bird of Highland County and John C. Matheny of Richmond undertook to clean and repair the "Daniel Matheny" cemetery located on the property of Mrs. Wilda Bird, of Valley Center. Due to rains of several weekends and the condition of the cemetery, it was impossible to do more than to clean the bushes and trees out and to salt it down in order to prevent the weeds from taking over before the work could be resumed this spring. It is hoped that within the next two or three weeks this work may be completed. The assistance of relatives and friends of those buried in this cemetery is badly needed both in work and money. The work that needs to be done at this time is to reset nine
stones that are down (none broken), graves need to be filled in, spraying to keep bushes down and a new fence erected. At the present time we have a small amount of money on hand to help with expenses but it is estimated that it is only about half what is needed. Members of the following families are buried there: Harouff, Bird, Matheny, Williams, Rider, Sharp and Smith. Anyone wishing to assist with this work may contact either of the "Birds" listed above or John C. Matheny, Richmond, Va. 23222. The history of a county is written by the early citizens who helped to build it, if these are lost we have nothing. Please help to keep the memory of these citizens and the history of Highland County alive! Mrs. John C. Matheny Richmond
