THE DIVERS FAMILY GRAVEYARD is located within the small ivy-covered walled area just off Farmington Drive that can be seen 150 yards east of Wood Lane.
Buried here are George Divers and Mrs. Divers and an infant son, Thomas Jefferson Divers. Mrs. Divers was the former Martha Walker, daughter of Dr. Thomas Walker, the appointed guardian of Thomas Jefferson and an important figure in Albemarle Country.
The grave of Judge John P. Bryan lies just outside the Divers graveyard. Judge Bryan died during a visit to Mr. Divers in 1803. He was soliciting funds for the reconstruction of Nassau Hall, historically famous building of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). During his visit, he became ill and died. Later, some of his collections were found sewn in his vest and the funds were returned to Princeton. It is said that the event gave rise to the term "vested interest".
On his grave slab appears this inscribed epitaph: "In him truth, honor, conscious worth combined to stamp a virtuous good and perfect mind. We view his life, see every act imply ‘who fears to live not will not fear to die.' One well spent moment ends the unequal strife and wafts our spirit to immortal life. Tho he is gone, the silent falling tear persuasive speaks. He still inhabits here."
