This cemetery is located in the City of Lynchburg, on land which was annexed from Campbell Co. by the city in 1958. To reach this cemetery, take Campbell Ave (Rt. 501, Business) to Florida Ave. Turn onto Florida Ave & after crossing the railroad, turn onto Winston Ridge Rd. The field enclosed by these two roads & the railroad is the property of the Humbles family. The railroad cut is on what once was the home of Adolphus Humbles (1845-1926). At the corner of the field is the Humbles family cemetery # 263. Brookville Baptist Church is across the street from the cemetery; although officially not a church cemetery some church members & neighbors have purchased plots from the Humbles family. Brush & vines surrounding the Humbles Cemetery have been cleared recently. This clearing has reveled another cemetery which was founded by 1856 and not previously recorded. The Mabens-Payne section predates the occupancy of Adolphus Humbles on the land and this section is outside the northeast corner of the Humbles cemetery. While some burials here may have been persons of Black or Indian origin, others appear to have been former slaves. Surveyed by Revely Carwile, Jr. Campbell Co. family cemeteries, Vol. VII, 1999.
