A sod church was erected on the southwest corner of the Bethel cemetery land in 1889. It was given the name of "Bethel", the Hebrew name for "the house of God". The church was abandoned and tore down in 1910.
The first grave in the cemetery was dug in 1889 and the last in the late 1930's. Some of the burials have been moved to other cemeteries. Since the association is not sure of all the unmarked graves no further burials are allowed
There is an association who still cares for the cemetery and keeps it good condition.
In 1978 Ollic and Mary Johnson had a granite stone set up on the site of the Bethel sod church in memory of the early settlers who founded the Bethel Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson erected many of the gravedstones as they learned where persons were buried.
It is located five miles east of and five miles north of Dix Nebraska on the northwest corner of section 3, township 15, range 53 in Kimball County, Nebraska.
Directions: Go East from Dix, Kimball County, NE on Highway 30 to County Road 67; Turn North on 67 and proceed to County Road 40. Turn East on 40 to County Road 69 and then turn North on 69. Continue on 69 to Bethel Cemetery, which is on the East side of the road.
