Jackson Family Cemetery - Update
The Jackson house at 1157 Swinks Mill Road (Route 685) was built sometime between 1698 and 1750, according to a 1971 Historic American Buildings Survey Inventory of the old house. When the Jacksons sold the land to the Cutts family in 1843, the deed reserved a quarter-acre plot as a family cemetery.
James W. Jackson, an early resident of the home, was a casualty in the first days of the Civil War and has become a local legend because of his actions. As the owner of the Marshall House in Alexandria, he displayed a Confederate flag from a window of the hotel. When the Union Army took control of Alexandria on 24 May 1861, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth led a group of soldiers to the Marshall House to remove the flag. When Jackson saw the men taking down the flag, he shot and killed Ellsworth and was immediately killed by Ellsworth's sergeant, becoming the first Confederate casualty of the war. James W. Jackson was buried with his mother in the Jackson Family Cemetery, but according to information on file in the Virginia Room of the Fairfax City Regional Library, he was later disinterred and buried with his wife Susan in Section I, Lot 43, Fairfax City Cemetery.
The Jackson Family Cemetery was surveyed in 1918, 1992, 1994 and 1999. The site is surrounded by a new, wooden fence and is beautifully maintained. The property owner, a Jackson family descendant, has erected two memorial obelisks across the graveyard from the marked burials. The following is a complete survey of the cemetery. (6 burials)
