This church and cemetery have been known to locals since 1930's as: EBENEZER METHODIST CHURCH AND GRAVEYARD or CLARKE CO.'EBENEZER CHURCH AND GRAVEYARD.'
NOTE: Because of research recently conducted and completed by Ms. Linda Martz of Middleburg, VA. in May 2012, it has been learned that "all of the land of the current church and graveyard was originally owned by Benjamin Franklin Littleton, his wife Margaret Littleton and brother William Littleton--all of Clarke Co., VA. It was sold on 22 Oct 1889 to a group of Clarke Co. men representing a 'new religious society' for the creation and building of of the METHODIST-EPISCOPAL CHURCH SOUTH of Clarke Co., VA., which was to also feature a public burial ground." The Deed was signed by all the parties involved and recorded at the Clarke County Court House on 10 Jan 1890.
Probably 90 percent of the names listed in this cemetery subsequently came from two sources: the research, 'tape-recorded' grave-transcriptions gathered during visits to this cemetery circa 2000 and 2001 by Larry and Barbara (Howdershell) Stickles--and includes some of their known family members also interred there. In addition, Donald and Mary Royston made any number of visits to this same cemetry, also performing grave transcriptions--which they then included and published in their book "Cemeteries of Clarke County, VA."-- circa 2005 by New Papyrus Publishing, Athens, GE. These two efforts are the only known 'listings' ever completed of the people buried there/known to exist anywhere. Both of these couples gathered these names, dates, maiden names, nick names, etc. from the gravestones that they were able to find and decipher during their individual visits there. There are no known church records, past or present, featuring a plat for the church or graveyard--nor any list of any kind on who was interred there.
Directions to this Cemetery: From Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) and where it crosses over the Shenandoah River: travel east on Rt. 7 back-up the mountain approximately 3/4 of a mile to 1-mile and you will see on the right-hand side of the road a sign for Rt. 604 (also known as Ebenezer Road); turn right on to this road. Travel approximately 1-mile and you will see a large sign on your left (along side of this same road) which reads "EBENEZER CHURCH OF GOD"; turn left on the first road past this sign and follow the lane up and around to your left and into the Ebenezer Church and Graveyard.
