Nestled on a mountaintop off the Brushy Mountain Road, a small family cemetery is covered in vinca minor.
The only identifiable stone is that of James Hayes & wife Elizabeth. This tombstone was purchased by their son, Harrison Elza Hayes, in the late 1940's and shipped to Kermit Hayes who was then living about a mile from the Hayes Cemetery. Twice, Kermit pushed a loaded wheelbarrow 1/4 mile uphill to haul stone and base to the gravesite. With the help of his sons, Kenneth and James, he placed the tombstone on the spot that was described in a letter from Elza. Later Elza Hayes visited the cemetery and said that he believed the stone was on the exact grave site.
The stone was reset in 2003 by descendants of James H Hayes. Tree roots had pushed up the base of the stone and causing it to fall over. The base was taken out of the ground to remove large tree roots. After cleaning the stone, the base was put back in place and the stone lifted back onto the base.
One more stone saved because someone cared enough!
