The Simon (Simmons) family were among the earliest settlers of New Bern. The monument above lists some of the family genealogy.

The cemetery is on the grounds of Waterloo, which is a private residence. Before entering the cemetery, please inform the residents that you wish to do so.

Waterloo was built about 1806 and is in the National Register of Historic Places. It is a cypress clapboard house with the interior walls, floors, and ceilings also of clapboards. The house is notable for its intricate stenciling along the crown and and chair-rail levels in the rooms which was done by one of the 19th century occupants. Many applications of linseed oil over the years to preserve the walls and floors of the house have darkened the wood and enhanced the stenciling.
