The house was built in 1813 by James Neal, who owned the surrounding plantation. The house was originally only seven rooms but has been added on to over the years to make it thirteen. James Neal was a typical Virginia gentleman of wealth and influence. He was an extensive farmer and also a merchant. He was Justice of Lunenburg County Court from 1841 to 1851. James married Mary Elizabeth Stokes, only daughter of Henry Stokes and Susan River Pettypool. After her death he married Catherine P. Rutherford.
James' son William Y. Neal, was one of a committee of five that drafted the famous resolutions of 1861, the adoption of which gave the county the name "The Old Free State" and "The Free State of Lunenburg".
Old Pleasant Grove was bought by Washington C. Winn in 1879, and occupied by his family for some sixty years. Washington Winn was the son of Edmund H. Winn. He married Ellen Brown Love, daughter of Captain James Chappell Love of Lunenburg County. Washington C. Winn represented Lunenburg County in the General Assembly of the sessions 1883-1884. During the War Between the States, he was a member of a company of Calvary known as Lunenburg Light Dragons. During the War Between the States the house and gounds were used as a Union Headquarters. Ironically on his return from surrender at Appomattox, General Robert E. Lee was an overnight guest.
Old Pleasant Grove is currently owned by Pat Myers who is in the process of restoring it.
