On one side, the cemetery was adjacent to Oslo Hospital's cemetery which is from approx. 1550. It first belonged to the Franciscan Monastery, which was taken over by Oslo Hospital in 1538. In 1624, it was newly constructed as Oslo Hospital's cemetery. Oslo bought this section on (8 dekar) 1,98 acres (US/UK) in 1961 and incorporated it into Gamlebyen gravlund.
Gamlebyen church is a privately-owned church, belonging to Oslo hospital and is also called Oslo hospital church. It is located next to the cemetery, on the other side of Ekeberg Road. This church was inaugurated in 1796, but as of January 1, 2014, it has been closed and is no longer in use as a church. In 1877, a burial chapel was built in the cemetery, no longer in use.
Gamlebyen gravlund has a small field with sailor's graves, where Oslo Internasjonale Sjømannshjem (the Oslo International Seamen's Home) has buried their own. There are also several graves for railway employees here. In 1972, a special burial ground was built for Muslims. Here are the graves facing Mecca. The burial ground also has a small memorial grove for urn graves with a common monument.
