Found this cemetery 10/2007 & attempted to photograph it again 7/2008. It is in area of two cedar trees, is overgrown and logging road has been put in beside it; there are mounds of dirt piled on what I am sure is part of this cemetery; could only find 9 stones and base of one marble headstone. This headstone has been missing since at least the early 1980's. There is a pile of stones in the center of this cemetery which were more than likely stones marking graves.
WPA Reading 12/1938: 5.5 mi NE of Walton on Johnson Creek Rd., Mack Kelly farm. Established c.1850 as slave burial ground, later being used as community burial ground by white people; extent; 1/4 a.; no restrictions as to type and placing of markers; not fenced, not landscaped; condition, poor, in use as pasture. Lots not marked; graves marked by monuments and field stones; lots not for sale; no burial records kept; no longer in use as burial ground; only stone dated 1854. Marked graves 1, unmarked graves, 27 or more.
11/2015: We cleaned up this cemetery and put fence posts to mark off 50x50 cemetery. Found 9 rocks total.
10/29/2016 UPDATE: We accidentally found a second marble base for what was probably a footstone for John McDonough Hershberger; half the length of only headstone base. These bases are marble and had been chiseled out to hold marble upright tablet and backfilled with lead when initially installed in 1854. Size of bases are approx. 24" (headstone) and 12" (footstone)
We placed new headstone in front of the base of headstone for John McDonough Hershberger. That makes 10 graves found to date in this cemetery. Some of the rocks marking graves were laying flat and extremely hard to find. We stood them back up. Also installed "Kelly Cemetery ~ est. 1850" sign on corner of cemetery. This sign was professionally done by Plate Engraving Corporation in Medina, OH. So very thankful for their help with this project.
