Add PhotosOld Gerenton, eight miles northwest of Vaiden, was settled by Mr. McLemore. He was a very wealthy man, owning a large tract of land and his home, which was built in 1850.
The population of the town of Gerenton only appears on the 1850 Mississippi (Carroll County) Census. In 1859, the (now) Illinois Central Railroad opened through Vaiden and Winona, and the town of Gerenton moved. The railroad affected a least three local towns: Shongalo (moved to Vaiden); Middleton (moved to Winona); and Gerenton moved (to Vaiden, Winona and Carrollton) taking the buildings and population with it. Montgomery County did not exist until 1871.
By the early 1900s almost all of the town of Gerenton had disappeared, leaving the beautiful Gerenton Cemetery with over 150 graves. Soon, the cemetery was set upon by vandals, and all but the few markers you see on this site, were either destroyed or resurfaced to be resold with others' names on them. The vandals were never caught.
Thus, the sancitity of the Gerenton Cemetery would never be the same, and the names of almost all of those buried there will be lost forever.
