The Jarvis Family Cemetery has been a place of much interest to relatives over the years. Slaves were buried in one half of it and family members and friends or those needing a grave in the other part. James McBride Jarvis requested, before he died in 1905, that no others be buried there now that they had a cemetery at Cranberry Church, given by Mr. I T Mathis. There were two more after that. The fence was kept carefully around it for years with the help of tenants, living on the farm, today it is an open area in the pasture land and grown up in tall white pines and other trees. We always remembered the huge hickory nut tree that grew in the center part. It was loaded with nuts and we did not want to eat them. It is above the old home and had only one stone standing. More recently, on Saturday, April 21, 2007, there was a marker dedication service sponsored by Sons of the Confederate Veterans, General James B Gordon Camp #810, honoring the life and service of Private William Garner of Company F, 37th Regiment, NC Infantry, CSA and his son, 1st Sergeant Hillary Thomas Garner, Company G, 54th Regiment, NC Cavalry, CSA. New headstones for both were unveiled. Many descendants from the Garner, Gray and Jarvis families were in attendance as well as friends from the community.
