The Monument of Independence, commonly known as El Ángel or The Angel of Independence, stands tall on Mexico City's iconic Paseo de la Reforma. Erected in 1910 to mark Mexico's War of Independence centennial, this victory column has evolved into a symbol of national pride and resilience.
Designed by Antonio Rivas Mercado, it features a bronze-sculpted base representing law, war, justice, and peace. The main face bears an inscription honoring the heroes of independence, accompanied by a statue of a lion guiding a child—a symbol of the Mexican people's strength and adaptability.
Adjacent to the column are marble statues honoring key figures from the war. Rising 36 meters high, the structure, adorned with intricate decorations, houses a staircase leading to a panoramic viewpoint. Atop the Corinthian-style capital sits a 6.7-meter statue of Nike, the goddess of Victory, holding symbols of triumph and freedom.
Despite facing challenges during its construction and undergoing restoration after natural disasters and acts of vandalism, El Ángel remains a resilient emblem of Mexico's history. Beneath its base lies a mausoleum housing the remains of prominent independence heroes, making it a revered site for historical significance.
Open for limited visits, climbing its 200 steps offers a breathtaking view, but the narrow and dimly lit staircase can be challenging. Nevertheless, this monument serves as a rallying point for celebrations, political gatherings, and national pride, embodying the spirit of Mexico City.
