Est. 1877.
Mrs. Mary Chappell, widow of Wilkes Chappell, was the first burial here, having donated the land for the Methodist Church & cemetery.
Was the Methodist church cemetery until 1908.
From "The Heritage of Chambers County, Alabama," page 12:
The first church at Penton was originally organized as Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, sometime around 1890. The oldest burial in the adjoining cemetery is 1877. Probably the church became known as Penton Methodist Church about the time the post office was established (1892).
In 1900, Rev. J. Lee and Elizabeth Ann Mitchell, missionaries of the Church of God which established in Alabama in 1891, came to Penton. They began holding religious services in various homes and soon erected a tent near the Methodist Church. This group, commonly known as the "Saints," was met with much opposition by the Methodists and others in the community. For several years much chaos and discontent existed between the two groups. Nonetheless, the Saints' following grew, and a small house of worship was built to replace the tent. This building was destroyed by the hand of an arsonist. Soon afterward another building was built and used for several years. After years of discontent between the two groups, the Methodists sold their building to the Saints around 1908, and reorganized several miles east as Chapel Hill Methodist Church. The Penton Church of God has been a landmark of the community since that time...."
UPDATE 12/17/2012 - It appears there were community burials on this land before 1877. A few unmarked date to the 1860's.
