The Tryon Cemetery is the final resting place of some of Tryon's earliest residents. It is located at 425 Markham Road in the Historic Eastside Community of Tryon. The property became an active cemetery in 1900 and the Tryon Cemetery Commission was established in 1923. With the support of residents, the first part of 3.3 acres was bought in 1892 as a donation to the town for a public cemetery.
All official records for the cemetery were destroyed in a fire many years ago. However, between 2000-2002 the Polk County Historical Association conducted a project to locate and record cemeteries in Polk County. Some cemeteries in Polk County may have been missed as they have been plowed over, forgotten, or lost in the woods.
If you are looking for an ancestor in Tryon Cemetery (a/k/a Tryon City Cemetery), the book, "Polk County, North Carolina Cemeteries" may be helpful. It includes the names and location (Section and Row) of the graves that the Historical Association was able to locate and may include dates and any inscription .
Note: There are many unmarked graves. Some graves are marked with field stones, some are broken, and some have sunk into the ground. However, all graves that were present and legible during the survey between 2000-2002 are included in the book and include the Section and Row number where they are located.
