Berkley Family Cemetery
Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
in 1970 the Fairfax Gen Society visited the cemetery directed by Mr. Winfield, a Berkely descendend who lived nearby at the end of Winfield Famr Road. The stones were found "a few feet northeast of the biggest poplar in the woods." One gravestone had fallen over and was resting on another. all the graves were in a straight line running north and south facing west.
September 1976 survey noted cemetery wooded and overgrown, reported graves were "sunken in, stones toppled, giving an abandoned and neglected appearance" and noted evidence of several unmarked graves.
Researchers returned to site in 1988, found area completely overgrown. In 1992, researchers were denied access to the propety. Neighbors related that the cemetery had been "bulldozed" during the construction of a barn and that nothing remained. The surveyors reported that the earth from the cemetery was pushed into a large pile by the buldozer an that the gravestones might be intact in the heap of dirt.
In May 1996, a member of the Society accompainied Evelyn Lancaster , the daughter of the property owner, through the dense woods to the site of the cemetery. Mrs. Lancaster was shocked to hear of the possible destruction of the Berkely Family Cemetery. She recalled that the resident on Chronical had received permission from her mother to build his barn up to the property line. Her memory and plat map agred with the early 1970's sketch that the cemetery was located just inside the fence dividing the Lee Highway property from the Chronical property.
When they reached the area, they found the fence which had seperated the two properties gone. a large ban had been constructed at the edge of the woods and a large area had been cleared behind the barn.
