Bio

Caring for memorials on behalf of: Mark Preston Hines Sr (b. 1954), Debra Ann Vause Hines (b. 1954), James Raymond Vause (b. 1939), Ruth Willitts Gray Vause (b. 1935), Paul Emil Schaum (b. 1946), Klare Anne Jacobs Schaum (b. 1945).

We are a husband and wife duo dedicated to researching our family history since the early 1990's. We believe family history belongs to all family members, and therefore should be shared, rather than hidden away. Each family member is entitled to have all information about their family history, which is our guiding principle when researching and sharing information.

Paul began actively researching his family history after a trip to his grandmother's ancestral land of Arendal, Norway. She introduced everyone as his "cousin". When he returned, he got into family research the "old fashioned way", ordering documents by mail, and reaching out to family members for information. He soon entered the Air Force, which kept him busy for over 20 years. With retirement, and down time due to the Pandemic, he was able to dig in to his family history with a renewed passion. He added his 10 year hobby of photography, enabling family members across the globe to see where loved ones were laid to rest.

Amy was inspired by her great grandfather's journey to find his birth family, as he had been orphaned at a young age. Although Paul Whipple Vause did not live to know he had actually found his ancestral home in Kinston, NC, it was very exciting when Amy found the documentation that verified who his grandfather was. This was validated by DNA testing of multiple family members, which led to even more discovery. (Although it is unclear if she was "the first" to find this documentation, it was new to her at the time. It's a shame if effort was duplicated due to people trying to hide such information from other family members. Again, all family members are entitled to family history.) Solving family mysteries has always been a focus for Amy, to include finding an unknown great grandfather, along with new aunts and cousins. She is currently focused on identifying her 3rd great grandmother, and getting closer every day!

We are also happy to accept messages, unless you've specifically received different direction from us. We work, to the best of our ability, according to the Genealogical Proof Standard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogical_Proof_Standard).
Please provide references for any recommended changes.

In general, we only sponsor memorials for our family members. Thank you to all those who have sponsored our memorials, especially when you have no relationship to them; it helps avoid seeing ads :).

We appreciate all those who have contributed to the Find a Grave community. Finding the Memorials of family members and related pictures that have been uploaded is always a wonderful discovery. This is especially true when family members/ ancestors are scattered throughout the United States and the rest of the world. It is a lot of hard work to traverse the land, do the research, and spend the time on the computer that you all have done so selflessly.
