I am retired from two professions, law and teaching. Now I am keeping busy with various volunteer activities, including helping folks find the graves of their long-lost relatives. Right now, I'm involved in a project to try to save Shady Lane Cemetery, in South Abington Township, PA. A prior owner of the cemetery looted the perpetual care fund and went to prison. The property was sold in 2010 for taxes to a buyer who thought the owner would redeem the cemetery and he would make a profit. When that did not happen, the purchaser abandoned the property. The cemetery steadily deteriorated until 2021, when Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery was founded. In 2022, we incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for the purpose of maintaining the property. We have cleared massive overgrowth and are working to post pictures of all graves in the cemetery (we estimate there are 6,000+ burials there). Anyone with an interest in the cemetery can join our Facebook group, Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery. We have uploaded maps of the cemetery and partial burial records that can be accessed through the FB group. We also have a webpage located at https://wordpress.com/view/friendsofshadylanecemetery.wordpress.com.
