Bio
I enjoy family geneology. I have been working on and off piecing my tree together since about 2008. I had a heavy interest in where I came from very early in life. As a young girl I would travel with my paternal grandmother and her mother to many cemeteries and photograph each headstone of my ancestors. I had my son in 2017 and picked up piecing together the family tree for him but of course adding his father's side. I have been blessed to have so much support from each side of the family. I have been given a lot of information and a generous amount of old family photos.
I have found that we have Union and Confederates both. My son is a descendant of Darling Jones, a revolutionary war veteran. I am a descendant of Alfred Crook Peters, another revolutionary war veteran. My fourth great grandfather Watson Collins was a union soldier captured during the civil war and died of scurvy in Andersonville prison. My son is a descendant of the brother of "Tiger" Whitehead. We meet annually for the Cates Clan Reunion. My son is the great, great grandson of a highly respected couple known in our small town. Mr. N.E. Hyder and Mrs. Rhoda Cates Hyder, they were very active in the community and school system.
* I highly recommend reading "Back on Nowhere Road" by Frances Henson VanLandingham, another of my son's kinfolk.
I search for ancestors of my son's. I add what I can.
Cates, Hyder, Williams, Jenkins, Collins, Bowers, McDonnell, Colbaugh, Peters, Pierce, Price, Greer, Shepherd, Patton, Hubbard, Mann, Baird, Keller, Whitehead, Smith, Walsh, Grindstaff, Bost, Sommersett, Lawless, Medlin, Watts, Crowe, Nidiffer, Taylor, Nave, Oliver, Snyder - I'm sure I've forgotten some.
I have found ancestors all over Tennessee and North Carolina, West Virginia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Most of our kin is here in Carter County, Tennessee!
