Bio

I have been an active genealogist for over 20 years and hold a master's degree in Heritage Preservation with a concentration in Public History. For nine years, my sole professional focus has been Black history and heritage in the City of Decatur and larger DeKalb County and I have been nationally recognized for this work.

I will honor all transfer requests by direct family members of the people whose memorials I manage. If you are related to anyone whose memorials I manage, I would love to hear from you! For many years, I have collected oral histories from Decatur and DeKalb Black families and I would love to add your stories to the public memory.

I manage memorials for historic African Americans in Decatur and DeKalb to preserve their memories, to reveal family connections, and to assist descendants in finding their ancestors. This is part of the work that I've dedicated my life to.

I hold thousands of documents related to the people who I research and have relationships with many relatives and descendants of African Americans who lived in Decatur and DeKalb. Sometimes, I do not share some of the information such as birth date or various name spellings because I have significant conflicting data. I WILL NOT edit memorials based on the cursory research of people whose only goal is to somehow "claim" as many memorials as possible on this site.

I also would appreciate if people would not post death certificates on my memorials where a cause of death is murder or something else of a sensitive nature. While this information is researchable in databases, I feel it is insensitive to display this on people's memorials, especially if your only goal in doing so is to put your name on something.

You can reach me here or through my website DecaturHistory.com, where you can learn more about Black history in Decatur--including many of the families whose memorials I manage-- and view some of my ongoing work, including my documentary 5 Generations: From Enslavement to Public Service in Atlanta.
