Bio

I was born in Cincinnati,Ohio, but the families of both my mother and father came from KY.

Mom's dad was a Peyton, her mother a McGaughey. Both families came from Central KY including Anderson, Jefferson, Franklin, Shelby etc.

I lived in Lexington KY 2 years after college and Louisville, KY for 7 years. I traveled this part of KY, SW Virginia and East Tenn, extensively before moving back to Ohio. I still like to hit the Bourbon Trail.

We had little to do with Mom's side, so I know little of the Peyton family, traditions or any shirt tail relatives who might have old family photos, or stories. However, there is a full-time Peyton genealogist and historical society. The Peyton owned land on the southern Potomac. Very unlike the family that live in "Over-the Rhine" Cincinnati in the 1930's & 40's.

I was close to my mother's mother, Leona McGaughey- Peyton, but we had little to do with my grandfather Allen Peyton. Al died when I was a kid. Grandma Peyton told me McGaughey stories when I was a kid, including their move to Florida.

She told me her dad, John McGaughey , who had to leave KY for awhile because of 2 killings.

In 2013 I met with John Shouse, a grandson to Leona from one of the 2 daughters she left to marry my grandfather. John gave me a whole different picture of the split between our mutual grandmother and his grandfather. He also gave me the only photo I had seen of my grandmother as a younger woman. After his passing, his sister, Karen, sent me a picture of John McGaughey she had found among John's possession.

As he described it, his grandfather, like mine, was an alcoholic, but unlike mine, still a caring man. Both men died in their 40's.

Dad's family is immediately from Wolfe, Powell & Lee Cos. KY. They came from Lee County Virginia probably through the Cumberland Gap.

In my 20's I was a minister and traveled extensively through KY from Louisville and Lexington to south eastern KY.

In my 20's, my wife and I hiked "the Cumberland gap" between Bell County KY and Lee County VA. This gave me a taste of my ancestor's trip.

In the late 1970's I lived in Johnson City Tenn. and as a minister traveled extensively through SW Virginia and East Tennessee.

If I had any idea genealogy was going to be such an important part of my life and I was living and traveling where my ancestors had, I could have been a lot deeper in this process.

It was my dad's Aunt Virginia Getrude Roberts who took me to the old Roberts-Shepherd graveyard, and explained "who was who."

Commodore P. Roberts and Floyd Roberts are my 3rd & 2nd Great Grandfathers. Samantha was my 2nd Great Grandmother, but Celia who is buried next to Commodore was his second wife and no kin of mine.

A few years later, Dad & I were able to find those graveyards. I've gone back a few times since and have added photos

My wife Cathy and I took another trip in July 2013 and re-photographed some of the same grave yards.

Willie Roberts was my great grandfather. He, his wife Dixie, Aunt Virginia Gertrude, and my grandparents Emma & Sherman Roberts as well as my uncle Chester Lee Roberts are buried nearby on the Roberts Farm at the top of a very long hill. That farm is now owned by my dad's brother Mitch and his wife Sue.
When I was a kid, we and my dad's family would often all travel from Cincinnati to visit "the farm" nd my grandmother's sister in Winchester, KY. Natural bridge was part of the trip.

When my sons were boys, I took them there and shared the old family stories. This included how and in which room "uncle Joe," Dixie's brother, killed himself. The house burned in 2012.

Willie and Dixie died when I was a teen. I remember both of them quite well. I recently spoke to Myrtle Roberts, my dad's Uncle Chester's wife i.e. Dixie & Willie's daughter-in-law. She, as everyone I know describe Willie as very a real tightwad and a real talker.

Myrtle describes Dixie as a sweetheart as would be seen in the fact that she named 2 of her sons, including Chester, after baby brothers who died when she was a little girl.

Dad & I also went to the cemetery behind the Church of God Cemetery in Campton where Dixie's family, the Williams, are buried. This included C.C. Williams and wife Alcy, all the children they lost and Alcy's mother and grandmother, the Cuddys. My dad remembers his great "grandpap" Williams who lived to be in his 90's. By that point he was an old man "snoozing on the porch" and the kids would tease him. Records show Christopher Columbus Williams (his name was passed to a grandson who was shot and killed by Willie Roberts) was involved in many things. That included being minister, blacksmith, farmer, starting the Masons in Wolfe County and traveling to Texas and later drilling for oil.

When Dad & I last visited, this cemetery was terrible grown over. In July 2013, we found a cemetery that was totally restored with a monument to the uncle of Abraham Lincoln.

My grandmother Emma Crow-Roberts used to take us to the Cable-Crow Cemetery, so we all knew where that was. James Will Crow and Dora Cable-Crow are my Great Grandparents. Dora died when I was a teen. She had severe Alzheimer's which has since showed up severely in an aunt and the beginnings in my father who is in his early 80's.

J.W. Crow(e)died on my grandmother's birthday when she was 13. Grandma said, her dad drank bad water and died. Jacob Cable and Susannah are also buried there. His brother and her sister also married and are buried on Big Andy Ridge.

My two elusive graves are Commodore's first wife, Lucinda Collier and Grandma Peyton's mom,Lutitia Thompson-McGaughey. Both died very young. WAR
