A native of South St. Louis, MO, Msgr. Arthur Bromschwig grew up in the Flora Boulevard historic district in that city's Tower Grove Park neighborhood, where his father, JOSEPH A. BROMSCHWIG, was a tailor. A cousin, Joseph H. Bromschwig, owned and operated a popular northside funeral home (now the A. L. Beal Funeral Chapel) located across from the non-sectarian historic Bellefontaine Cemetery on West Florissant Avenue. Father Bromschwig attended the Archdiocesan Preparatory Latin High School, Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary.
Ordained in 1950 at the New Cathedral of St. Louis by Joseph Cardinal Ritter, Father Bromschwig served in a variety of pastoral and educational assignments in South St. Louis City and North St. Louis County, among them, pastor of St. Francis deSales Church on Gravois and Ohio avenues in South St. Louis. (He had the unfortunate task of closing the parish high school there after more than 50 years of operation, and restructuring the parish management).
Afterwards, he was named pastor of the historic St. Peter Catholic Church in St. Charles in the latter part of his priestly career, serving there until being named pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Florissant, where he died on Jan. 13, 2007.
After a concelebrated funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church (Florissant) celebrated by St. Louis Archdiocesan administrator Bishop Robert Hermann, he was buried on the priests lot at St. Peter's Cemetery in St. Charles (at his specific request) beneath the main cemetery crucifix. Kriegshauser Brothers Funeral Service was in charge of his funeral arrangements.
The traditional St. Louis Archdiocesan Monsignor's marker with raised chalice erected on his grave bears the Latin epitaph on the frontpiece of his tombstone (translated) "A Priest Forever."
