DONALD ERIC HANSON: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
San Mateo County Times (CA) - Friday, May 25, 2007
Deceased Name: DONALD ERIC HANSON
Passed away on May 18, 2007 at age 68 after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Don was born in San Diego, California, on April 20, 1939 to Donald and Gertrude Hanson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Lois Hanson Roberts, Eloise Hanson Culver, and Sherrel Hanson Brewer. Don attended high school in San Diego, and college at Stanford University, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Navy pilot and served his country in Vietnam. Don earned a law degree from USF, and practiced law in San Mateo for the past 30 years. Don is survived by his wife, Valarie, his son Donald Eric Hanson, Jr., his step-son, Paul Vallesteros, his step-daughter Annie Stoneman, her husband Shane, and their daughter, Ella Skye; his mother-in-law, Adele Krell of Sunnyvale, his sisters-in-law Linda (Fuller) Dean of San Diego, Rhonda (Dave) Lazar of San Jose; and many nieces and nephews in San Diego and San Jose. Don Hanson's life was centered around his family and marked by a commitment to service within the community. The strength, integrity, and quality of his character inspired and encouraged many people in the organizations with which he was involved. Don's dedication to community service started with becoming an Eagle Scout. He became active in the Boy Scouts again with his sons; and he continued to give his time and creative energy to many of their events for the remainder of his life. Don demonstrated leadership skills early and was Junior Class President in 1955 at San Diego High School. He always advocated fairness and equality, fighting against anti-Semitism in his fraternity, ATO. He graduated from Stanford University in 1961, active in the ROTC Program and became an officer and pilot in the Navy. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Rotary Haciendas and Rotary Floritas, non-profit retirement homes in San Mateo, Board of Directors San Mateo Rotary Club; Board of Directors Foster City Youth Baseball Association; Board of Directors Longwater Homeowners Association; Board of Directors Pacific Skyline Council of Boy Scouts of America. Don was a devoted husband, father, uncle and grandfather, and maintained his relationships with many friends from grade school, high school, college and law school. His love of San Diego, Stanford and San Francisco inspired his amazing ability to share the highlights of those areas with those he loved. His family learned to share his enthusiasm for tailgating at the Stanford football games, no matter what the weather conditions. The family enjoyed many adventures, including many cross-country trips by car to share his passion for national parks, amusement parks with high-flying rides, picnics, and family reunions. This passion extended to his highly-anticipated and attended "mystery night" excursions with his friends of the San Mateo Rotary Club, whereby Don planned and escorted the group to fun, exciting and locations unknown to the participants until the last minute. He was a terrific host, and easily shared his home and family with the Rotary program which hosted Russian doctors and public relations professionals. Don had an infectious sense of adventure and enthusiasm for exploring the diverse historical, artistic, musical, theatrical, culinary, and natural treasures of the San Francisco Bay Area. He had a fondness for street fairs and loved to support local artists and comedy clubs. His own sense of humor was dry and his conversation clever with puns (which made us groan at times). Jazz and gospel music were his passions. He was a very talented composer and musician, playing saxophone with a high school band. As a pianist, he wrote music for a children's play. Don also was a prolific photographer, documenting all of the family adventures and events. Don loved and made holidays memorable and often served his famous Eggs Benedict for the entire family. His warmth, generosity, humor, and genuine caring for others will be missed. He enjoyed life to the fullest. The respect and care for the dignity of others endeared Don to all who knew him. Don Hanson will be remembered for his many contributions to the community, his accomplishments, his sense of fun and adventure, but above all, he will remembered for his outstanding character. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church, 2145 Bunker Hill Drive, San Mateo, California.
