Commander Karns died in the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Norman graduated from San Diego High School in 1957 in San Diego, California and graduated from Stanford Univeristy in 1961. Upon graduation, he attended the Navy's officer candidate school; the Navy Justice School and the Dept. of Defense Info. School.
Cmdr. Karns served as the legal officer aboard the aircraft carrier Ranger and was public affairs officer on the staff at several Naval installations throughout the world.
He held an important Naval position in Spain, working at the Embassy there. Later, he was the Public Affairs Director for the Navy at the Pentagon, before he became terminally ill.
While in high school, Norm received several awards for scholastic achievement.
Norman was a highly skilled tennis player, and, when still in High School, he won a National Tennis Championship and several other trophies. For his several achievements in tennis, he is noted in the Sports Hall of Fame.
Norm was an only child, his father being a local San Diego Attorney. He leaves behind, his parents, two sons and an adopted son.
