Astronomer. He was the fourth English Astronomer Royal, a position he held from 1762 to 1764. He received his formal education at Pembroke College in Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1720 and a Master of Arts degree in 1723. He became the rector of Saint Ebb's church in Oxford and in 1742 he succeeded Edmond Halley as professor of geometry at Oxford University, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society the same year. He succeeded James Bradley to the Astronomer Royal position in 1762. He is buried in an unmarked grave at the Saint Margaret of Antioch Churchyard in London.
