Obituary for Dr. Jeffrey Dee Fleigel
Doctor Jeffrey Dee Fleigel passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2012 in Ocala. He was born August 21, 1945 in New York City, NY to Rachael and Sidney Fleigel. He was passionate about knowledge and education, but his priority was kindness to his fellow man. Dr. Fleigel began his long educational career by graduating Cum Laude from the prestigious Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and with Honors in Biology and Organic Chemistry. From there, he attended the City University of New York-Brooklyn College. Dr. Fleigel graduated with Thesis Honors from University of Buffalo College of Medicine. He went on to complete elective course work at Oxford University in London in biochemistry related research, a Fellowship in Physiology at Columbia University and an Immunology Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He completed his Internship in General Surgery at Cornell University Medical Center and his residency in Otolaryngology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. While in residency, he met his wife, Suzanne. Dr. Fleigel was a patriot, serving in the United States Navy as Chief of ENT at Quantico Naval Hospital and earning a Commendation from the Surgeon General of the United States Navy. He moved to Ocala in 1978 to practice Otolaryngology. As a long standing member of the Ocala Community, he provided compassionate and quality medical care for thousands of families. Dr. Fleigel has been a mentor to numerous high school students interested in medicine, a generous supporter of local charitable activities, and an active fundraiser in the Campaign for Stuyvesant. Dr. Fleigel is preceded in death by his father Sidney and mother Rachael, and survived by his wife Suzanne, his sister Risa, and his children Claire, Jeff, Holly (daughter-in-law), Margaret, and his grandson Zachary. He was a wonderful father and husband, as well as a kind and generous person, who was loved by many and will be missed by all. A graveside service for family will be held at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens in Boynton Beach, Florida, on Sunday, October 21 at 12:15 PM. A memorial service will be held Monday evening, October 22, at 7 PM in the Klein Center at the College of Central Florida, 3100 SW College Road. Longtime Ocala physician Jeffrey Dee Fleigel died suddenly Oct. 17 of an apparent heart attack. He was 67.
The otolaryngologist opened his ear, nose and throat practice in Ocala in 1978 and was later joined by his wife, Suzanne, who also is an otolaryngologist.
On Wednesday, Suzanne Fleigel remembered her husband as a compassionate physician whose concern for his patients went beyond their ears, noses and throats.
"He cared for all his patients, but he loved children especially. If they had a play at the civic theater or had an animal in the fair, he would make it a point to go see them," she said. "Whenever he saw a patient he tried to be very conscious about them as a whole. He was very holistic in the way he treated his patients."
Jeffrey Fleigel also mentored area high school students who were interested in medicine.
"It wouldn't be just about the medical field. He'd talk to them about all sorts of things," Suzanne Fleigel said.
Despite maintaining a busy practice, her husband also was able to attend the school and athletic functions of his own three children.
"He never missed any activity the children had, and they were very active in all sorts of activities and sports," Suzanne Fleigel said.
But what she really loved about him were his broad interests.
"He is the most well-rounded person I have ever known," she said.
When Fleigel was young, he learned to play the clarinet, saxophone and cello. He enjoyed architecture and sketched constantly.
"I have all these sketches he did. I don't know what I'm going to do with them all," Suzanne Fleigel said.
As for the medical practice, she has not made a decision if she will continue without her husband or wind it down.
"We want to do what's in the best interest of the community. Right now, it's just too fresh," she said.
