On July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, the Second Maryland was pinned down on Culps Hill by a hail storm of enemy fire. He was immediately hit in the arm by a mine ball. William was taken off the field and was eventually taken to a Seminary hospital near Hagerstown, Md where he died from his wound.
