In his profession, he was the assignor on two US Patents, i.e. he invented something while in the employ of a company and obtained patents for the inventions.
Cause of death was such that he was cremated, and it is believed his ashes were scattered on a mountain in New Hampshire. See photos at right.

Marion H. Merriss--
Marion H. Merriss 48 years old of the sales division of the ammonia department. DuPont Company, died last night at his home at Ardentown. He had been ill about a year. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Hazel Schmutz Merriss; four children by a previous marriage, William E. and Joeffrey Merrlss, of New York City; Philip R. Merriss. of Bolivia, S. A., and Miss Joan Elizabeth Merriss, of Truro, Mass., his mother, Mrs. May Buckland Merriss and two stepsons, Earle and Richard West of Ardentown. His father, the late William Ellery Merriss was secretary of the American Smelting and Refining Company of New York for many years. Mr. Merriss moved to Ardentown from New York City about 10 years ago when he became associated with the DuPont Company. He was a native of Pueblo, Colo. He was formerly secretary of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and was a member of the Phi Pi and the Sigma Psi fraternities. His early education was received in New York City. He attended Cornell University and later received an engineering degree at Columbia University. The funeral will take place from the McOvry Funeral Home, 2700 Washington Street tomorrow night with services in Calvary Church, the Bishop Coleman Memorial, Fourth and Rodney Streets, at 7:30 o'clock. The Rev. Father William Chalmers, of the Order of the Holy Cross at West Park. N. Y. will offciate.

Marion H. Merriss, of the sales department of the ammonia division of the duPont company, died last night at his home at Ardentown, at the age of 48. Mr. Merriss moved to Ardentown from New York about ten years ago, at which time he became connected with the du Pont company. He was a native of Pueblo, Col. He was formerly secretary of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.
