Son of Thomas and Mary (Allen) Larmer. Widower of Nancy J. Pennington. Married on July 9, 1863, while on furlough from Confederate Army, to Nancy J. Pennington in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia, by Rev. Everett.

James joined the Confederate Army in 1861 and was Captain of Co. H in the VA Cavalry. During the beginning of the war he served under General Floyd in Virginia. He stayed in the army until the war ended, surrendering at Cumberland Gap.

They came to Missouri in 1882 and lived in Albany, MO since then. House Painter and Home Decorator. The 1900 census states they were the parents of eight children, four now living: Norman H., Rosa, Dora, and Ray. It also states he was born May 1839 in Virginia, which agrees with the death certificate.

Died of cerebral hemorrhage, aged 90y 8m 2d. Buried in Grandview Cemetery per death certificate and obituary.
