He enlisted in Sep 1862 for service during the Civil War and served as a First Sergeant in Company C, 23rd Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out on 15 Jul 1863 at Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.
Wife Abbie died 4 days after the birth of their son Ernest in May 1873. The child was given in unofficial adoption, to be raised by Abbie's sister, Rebecca Adelaide Rowe and husband Solomon Francis Stetson.
Stephen married 2) Ella Sophia Robinson on 10 Mar 1875 at Sumner, Oxford County, Maine. They had a daughter:
