Mrs. Ruby Ortence Squires Buchanan
of Greensburg, Kentucky, daughter of the late Rev. Claud Columbus Squires and Exie Ona Pickett Squires, was born on February 23, 1925 in Green County, Kentucky, and departed this life on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Golden Living Center-Green Hill. She was 87 years, 7 months and 20 days of age.

She united in marriage to John Wesley Buchanan on December 23, 1944 who preceded her in death August 1983. To this union was born five sons and three daughters: Kenneth Stuart Buchanan who passed away on March 2, 2007, Robert Evan Buchanan of Greensburg, Reid Simmons Buchanan and his wife Lola of Lexington, Timothy Ray Buchanan and his wife Ann, Jerry Wesley Buchanan and his wife Pat all of Tennessee, Janice Lee Herman and her husband David of Alabama, Claudette D.Onie Wygal and her husband John of Alabama, Deborah Jane Brizendine and her husband Clint of Bowling Green.

Other survivors include: 21 grandchildren: Alan Hale, Wesley Buchanan, Jennifer Wood, Jessica Eberhardt, Joselyn Herman, Jodie Austin, Miriah Penick, Sean Buchanan, Brooke Brizendine, Andrew, Jeremy, Serwaa, and Akua Buchanan, John, Justin and Benjamn Wygal, Jamie Benningfield, Stephanie and Jacob Buchanan, Ali and Rachel Buchanan; 14 great-grandchildren; the mothers of grandchildren: Beverly Buchanan of Greensburg, and Karen Allen of Lexington; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a devoted servant and member of the Summershade United Methodist Church. She was a retired Inspector for Fruit of the Loom, Inc., formerly Union Underwear, where she worked for 23 years. She was a foster parent to many young people in need of a home, she provided care for disabled adults in her home, she worked with her husband on their Green County farm helping with planting, harvesting and animal care, hosted Girl Scout Troops, and wrote a Fry Community News Column for the Greensburg Record-Herald. At a later age in life she passed the GED exam and then attended a writing class at Lindsey Wilson College during one semester when three of her grandchildren were also students there. One of her great joys in life was to travel. She made frequent trips across the United States including a visit to Alaska. She traveled internationally to the Holy Land and Greece, which were highlights of her travel adventures. Her other interests were many, but she focused on family, gardening and reading.

The funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Ortence Squires Buchanan will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Summershade United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Coffey Cemetery. Bro. Rick Bard and Bro. Darrell Coffey will be officiating.

Visitation is requested from 5:30 until 8 P.M., Friday at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home and after 9 A.M., Saturday until time of the funeral service.

Memorials are suggested to the Summershade United Methodist Church, which can be made at the funeral home.
