BURLEY – A man of keen mind, quiet dignity, and unfailing humor, Jackson Wayne Allred, will be missed and warmly remembered by his family and friends. Jack passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

Jack was born to Herbert Ross and Lydia Mary (Hawkins) Allred on Dec. 10, 1926, at American Falls, Idaho. He attended schools in Twin Falls thru high school, then at Farreget College in Bayview, Idaho. He worked at the shipyards of Spokane until he was old enough to enlist. He then joined the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran.

Jack met and married the love of his life, Betty L. Hillegas, of Kimberly, on July 18, 1948. They made their home at Murtaugh where Jack began his lifetime farming operation. He later moved to Burley and continued to farm with his brother, Robert, his son, Jackson, and nephew, Mitch Allred – later joined by grandson, J.W. Allred.

Always a generous man and devoted husband, Jack was involved with many worthwhile projects including, the Idaho Youth Ranch, chairman of the Idaho Potato Commission, longstanding member of the National Potato Board, and a loyal benefactor of the College of Southern Idaho. He was awarded the Outstanding Young Farmer by Twin Falls County, and Farmer of the Year by the Mini-Cassia Chamber of Commerce.

Jack and Betty volunteered for U.S. Aid, and traveled several times to Egypt to teach farming skills there. They traveled the world, learning new cultures and enjoying new adventures.

He was a longtime member of the Murtaugh Community Church and later of the Burley First Presbyterian Church. He lived a devoted Christian life.

Jack had many skills and talents. He was a carpenter, building homes and cabins. He was a private pilot and flew often to Ketchum, Idaho, to join family at the cabin. He loved to snow ski and was still skiing at the age of 80. Golf became a passion. He golfed often with friends and acquaintances at courses around Oceanside, CA, where he and Betty spent winter months.

Jack leaves behind his loving and dedicated wife, Betty Allred, of Burley; son, Jackson W. Allred (Laurie), of Burley; a daughter, Jill M. Wornell (Paul), of Burley; grandchildren: J.W. Allred (Emily), of Burley, Chelsey Wornell, of Boise, Jeanine Allred, of Hailey, KyLee Wornell, of Claremont, CA, Tessa Wornell Bogue (Rick), of Boise, and Christopher Wornell (Laura), of Plainfield, WI; great-grandsons: Corbin and Dillon Allred, of Burley; nieces: Miriam Allred Smith (Richard), of Burley, and Connie Jones (Stephen), of Boise.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, James Allred and Robert Allred; a granddaughter, Allison Wornell Allen; and a nephew, Mitch Allred.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2100 Burton Ave., in Burley, with the Rev. Dr. David Henry officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Twin Falls.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
