Funeral services for Carrie Griggs Akins, 80, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Bob Thomas and the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Friday, December 19, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 East Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
Mrs. Akins died Wednesday, December 17, 2008. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Ola Gainey Griggs. She was a life long member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, the Hartsville Pilot Club, and was retired from Harris Teeter after 27 years.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Gail and Robert Garland of Darlington, SC; grandchildren, Chris (Heather) McLeod, Robert Garland, Jr.; sisters, Letha Barnhill of Patrick, SC, Helen Byrd, Beulah (Kenneth) Chapman, both of Byrdtown, SC; brothers, Howard (Ruth) Griggs, Olin (Miriam) Griggs, Harvey (Helen) Griggs, all of Hartsville, SC, David (Ann) Griggs of Sumter, SC; She was preceded in death by her brothers, Horace Griggs, James Griggs, Ray Griggs, and Raymond Griggs.
