Funeral services will be held at 5 o'clock this afternoon from Washington Street Methodist Church with his pastor, D. C. Herbert and Dr. E. O. Watson in Charge. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Bigby's service with the fire department fall into two separate periods, the first of which continued for about four years. After a short interval, he again joined the department to serve until his death or for 17 years. During that time he rose to the rank of Captain. For the past three years he was assigned to inspection because of ill health.
He was born at Honea Path, Anderson County, October 31, 1833, the son of the late George A. Bagby and Emma Robertson Bigby.
Surviving him are his widow, former to their marriage September 19, 1917, Miss Maggie E. Boland; his mother, Mrs. Emma V. Bigby; four sisters, Mrs. Joe Young of Due West, Miss Modena Bigby, Mrs. T. W. Bigby, Mrs. T. W. Danielson and Mrs. Eugenia B. Kibler, all of Columbia, and six nephews.
Mr. Bigby was a man highly admired by those who knew him and the news of his death will bring widespread grief.
His nephews will serve as active pallbearers: Frank L. Young, Due West; George L. Young. Florence; W. M. Young, Petersburg, Va.; W. A. Young, Due West; J. L. Hester, Jr., and Bernard Hester, Columbia.
Honorable pallbearers will be: B. L. Swygert, A. G. Fleming, J. N. Pearman, W. L. Morris, Dr. C. L. Kibler, W. D. Barnett, Sloan B. McGee, W. H. Atteberry, William Kelly and Walter Archer.

Per his death certificate found on Ancestry.com: he was a son of George A. Bigby and Emma Robertson, both born in S.C. and the husband of Mrs. Margaret E. Bigby. There is no DOB but his age is given as 47. He was a fire inspector. He died at the Columbia Hospital of appendicitis.
The posted obituary was found in The State 17 April 1931. Note the conflict with the DOB on his grave marker. His WWI Draft Registration Card puts his year of birth in 1882.
