He was the co-owner/operator of the former Abel Tire Co., Lehighton, and previously owned the former Bandbox Dry Cleaners, Lehighton.
Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late August M. and Katerina (Mikula) Abel.
He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Lehighton.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operations and attained the rank of sergeant. He was a Bronze Star Medal recipient.
The deceased enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman, having taken several trips to 31 Mile Lake, Quebec, Canada.
Surviving are two sons, Robert F., and his wife, Paula Lee, of Lehighton, and August M. Jr., and his wife, Jeanie, of Middletown, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Jamie, Matthew, Kelly, Marcie, Mallory, Fallon and Rachael; four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Peter P. and Rudy C.
