CAYCE-A memorial service to celebrate the life of Hugh "Dig" Douglas Shearer III, 48, will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Edwards Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1600 Summerland Dr. Cayce, SC 29033. The Rev. John Rogers will officiate. Mr. Shearer died on August 21, 2012, at Lexington Extended Care. Born in Gaston, he was the son of the late H.D. and Thelma Wise Shearer. He grew up in Gaston and was a graduate of Swansea High School. Doug fought his battles with dignity and love for others. His love was never ending; he donated his body to MUSC of Charleston, SC in hopes of helping others. Hugh is survived by three sisters, Frances Shearer, of Gaston, Linda Bass, of Chester, Connie Sharp, of Gaston, (Larry). Two brothers, Herbert Shearer, of Gaston (Kelly), Stevie Peak, of Gaston (Evelyn) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The National Lymphadema Society, American Heart & Lung Association , Cancer Association, the Autism and Deaf Associations of America, and God's Helping Hand of Cayce. The family would like to express deep thanks to Kelli McHale who helped care for Hugh, also to God's Helping Hands for their care and help. Also, to the Edwards Memorial Presbyterian Church family for all their help and care, and Lexington Extended Care.
