FORSYTH, MT. --- Roscoe B. Smith, 74, of Ashland, retired range manager for the U.S. Forest Service, died Thursday night in Rosebud Community Hospital.

He came to Montana in 1915 to join his father on a homestead near Ashland.

After ranching in the area, he went to work for the Forest Service in 1947, then retired in 1962.

He was born Feb. 19, 1897, in Marshall, N.C., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith.

He married Ora Farris April 23, 1918, in Forsyth.

He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include the widow, of Ashland; two daughters, Mrs. Loice Scroggin of Portland, OR., and Mrs. Aileen Wilbur of Palm Desert, CA., a brother Otto R. Smith of San Antonio, TX., three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Beals Mortuary.

The Rev. Norman Austin of the Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Forsyth Cemetery, Forsyth, MT.
