Pearl Goforth Payne, 91, of Morganton, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011. Born in Madison County July 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Philetus Victor Goforth and Lola Martin Goforth. In addition to her parents, Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Dean Payne; sisters, Allie Haynes, Mary Kate Roberts, and June Goforth; an infant sister, Grace Goforth; and brothers, Edmond Goforth and P.V. Goforth. "The greatest gift we ever received came from God: our mother." Pearl is survived by her son, Dennis Payne and wife, Linda, of Morganton; daughters, Jo Anne Houk and Mary Dean Taylor, both of Morganton; grandchildren, Donna Holland and husband, Mike, Susan Patton and husband, Jeff, and Steve Houk, all of Morganton, and Pamela Wurtz and husband, Rob, and Lindsey Payne, both of Greensboro; great-grandchildren, Alex Patton, Ashlee Holland, Austin Houk, Samantha Patton, Sara Houk, and Kyle Wurtz; brothers, Robert Goforth and wife, Maggie, of Michigan and Albert Goforth of Florida; and a sister, Geneva Elliot of Tennessee. The graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Glen Alpine Cemetery with Rev. Sid Houk officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 9, at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
