Mr. Charles Felton Abernathy, age 87, of Rome, GA and formerly of Cedartown passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011. Mr. Abernathy was born May 29, 1923 in Cobb County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown. He was a retired Captain with the Georgia State Patrol serving from 1949 until 1977. As a State Trooper, he was stationed in Dalton, Villa Rica, Manchester, Thomaston, Canton and Lawrenceville, GA. In 1960 while in Cedartown, he was promoted to Sergeant and in 1971 he was promoted to Captain until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Abernathy was also a member of the National Peace Officers Association and the Georgia Peace Officers Association. He served in the United States Army during WWII. Mr. Abernathy was very active in the Cedartown Optimist Club for a number of years. He was a member of the Caledonia Lodge # 121 F&AM as well as a Mason for over fifty years. Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by his father and mother George W. & Edna Abernathy Sr., his beloved wife, Elsie Berry Abernathy, his step son, John P. Berry, daughter, Myra Abernathy and three brothers, Curtis Abernathy, G.W. Abernathy Jr., and Pierce Abernathy. Surviving are two nieces, Patricia & Tim Wheeler and Barbara & Les Hardman, daughter in law, Thalma Berry, grandson, Parker & Brandi Berry, granddaughter, Bonnie Berry, great grandson, Ben Berry and two great nieces. Also, his dedicated caregivers, Blanch Williams, Carla Barnes, Diane Brumit and Harriett Powell. Funeral services for Charles F. Abernathy will be conducted Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with Dr. David Taylor and Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until the Funeral Hour. Pallbearers will be members of the Georgia State Patrol. The family has asked that flowers please be omitted and donation please be made to the American Heart Association. The Lester C.
