Retired U.S. Navy Capt. James Wesley Harris, 74, died in his home surrounded by his family June 21, 2001. He was born in Mount Airy, N.C., and attended Wake Forest University and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the class of 1953. His 35-year career in the Navy included command of the USS Portage, USS Dominant, Mine Division 41, USS Stickell and USS Diamond. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Kempsville, the Norfolk Suburban Lions Club and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his first wife, Louise Harris. He is survived by his wife, Faye Harris; his daughter, Joy Reinicke and family; his stepdaughter, Hope Clayton and family; his stepsons, David Robison, Michael Robison and Don Robison and their families; and his sister, Betty Ann Hinshaw and family. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Community United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, by Dr. G. Keith Almond. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Dr. Fenton Wicker.
