He was born May 14, 1921, at Salem (ID) to James Eli and Emily Withers Hope. He attended Hibbard and Sugar-Salem elementary schools and Sugar-Salem High School. He attended Ricks College [now BYU-ID] and the University of Idaho, graduated with a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, and earned a master's degree from New York University.
During World War II, he served in the US Navy as a seaman first class.
On July 23, 1946, he married Madge Frost in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He was employed as a recruiter for the Atomic Energy Commission's Idaho operation, now the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, and in the personnel department at Westinghouse. He was later self-employed as a chartered life underwriter. He had lived for 18 years in Salem, a year in San Diego, two years in Provo, Utah, a year in New York City, two years in Rexburg, and 43 years in the Idaho Falls area.
As an active member of the LDS Church, he served a mission in the east central states, with the youth and in priesthood positions, and as an officiator in the Idaho Falls Temple for 17 years. He enjoyed genealogy and temple work.
Survivors include his wife, children, 4 brothers [names deleted], 28 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Ammon LDS 1st Ward, with Bishop Steven Pulley officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Falls and Wednesday for one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Ammon Cemetery.
