Robert Tally volunteered for the 8th South Carolina Infantry Company I on April 13, 1861 for twelve months. He was enlisted by E.T. Stackhouse in Charleston, SC. In January or February of 1862 he was sent home until April 13, 1862 when he joined Company L for two years. He was absent for several weeks during February 1864. He was wounded at Cold Harbor on June 8 and admitted to the Jackson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia until July 21, 1864. He was paroled in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 2, 1865.
According to the Dillon Herald issue in February 13, 1919 the final discharge notice of the Tally Barfield estate was given. This puts his death date prior to 1919. Source: Jo Church Dickerson Survey June 1997 and South Carolina Archives.
