Edgar was of the Brewington area of Clarendon County and is said to have had 3 wives. He was mustered into service at Georgetown, S. C. in 1862 as Capt of E. N. Plowden Co (later, Co. I) of the 25th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (Eutaw Regiment) during the Civil War. According to a 14 June 1881 letter from J. A. Mayes of Mayesville, S. C. to kinsman John G. Shaw in Mississippi, his 3rd wife was a Mellette (the widow Dickey). My genealogy collection indicates that he and Lillis Marie Shaw Plowden had 11 children: Isabella Lillis Plowden (m. David Wentworth Durant); Vera Ann Plowden (m. John Calhoun Durant); Edgar Shaw Plowden; David Calvin Plowden; Martha Ada Plowden (m. David Wentworth Plowden in 1884 after his wife...her sister...died in 1880); Irvin Vincent Plowden; Clara Plowden (never married); Eloise Plowden (she died one week prior to her upcoming wedding to John C. Durant whose wife was her sister & had died in 1904); Lila Annie Plowden (m. James McFaddin Montgomery); Annie Plowden (m. Smith Nelson); and Lillis Plowden (she died at age 3). Capt. Plowden and his second wife, Isabella Montgomery Plowden had one child: Henry Montgomery Plowden. Capt. Plowden and his 3rd wife had no children together.
