Born to Jonathan Willard and Abigail Jane Rose. He was a minister of the Gospel. Was for some years in New York State, on the St. Lawrence River. He removed to Streetboro, Ohio, later to Wellington, Ohio. Samuel was the father of Archibald M. Willard who painted the famous
"Spriit of 76". A. M. Willard used his father, with his strong Vermont face, for the old drummer. Feeble at the time, Samuel did not live to see the painting finished. From the "History of the Western Reserve."

Note: his birth card attached in photos shows he was born 10 years earlier. Often mistakes were made with birth records but also mistakes were made relying on a family members memory.
