Scientist. A pioneering physiologist, he did monumental research in the physiology of muscle tissue. He discovered the pancreas produced substances that break down molecules of fat, and most digestion occurred in the small intestines, not the stomach as had previously been thought. He also discovered that red blood cells carried oxygen, and that carbon monoxide could replace the oxygen leading to death. His death was caused by a kidney infection. Bernard's funeral was arranged by the government of France and was the first so for any French scientist.
