KING - Clara Bowers Bowen May 30, 1925 - Sept. 18, 2011 Mrs. Clara Bowers Bowen, 86, of 1280 Faulkenberry Ridge Road in King, joined her heavenly family on Sunday, September 18, 2011. She was born May 30, 1925 to Virgil H. and Lena Ila Kirkman Bowers in High Point, NC where she grew up and later met the love of her life, Claude Bowen. Mrs. Bowen was the loving mother of eight children, worked tirelessly on the family farm and retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Brook Cove plant. She was an avid quilter making quilts for the family and friends, enjoyed being surrounded by flowers she grew and nurtured as well as a large vegetable garden she carefully canned and froze for the family. A veracious reader she was always surrounded by books she donated after reading. Clara loved to join her friends and family at Mizpah Moravian Church where she was a member all of her adult life. In addition to her parents Virgil and Lena Bowers, she was preceded in death by her adored husband, John Claude Bowen, her youngest son, Walter E. Bowen, two brothers, Grover Bowers and Harold Bowers, two sisters, Edith Hall Spangler and Lena Blanche Morgan. She leaves behind seven children, Marie Pelfrey (Larry) of Ohio, Lena Greenlee (Stephen) of Broadway, Phyllis Owens (Clarence) of Fayetteville, John W. Bowen (Dawn) of Walnut Cove, Florence Moore (Gary) of Winston-Salem, Darlene Williams of King, and Carol Forrester (Alvin) of East Bend; a brother-in-law, Harrison Bowen, and a sister-in-law, Treva Bowen both of Tobaccoville. She had thirteen grandchildren, Frank (Teresa) Pelfrey, Patty Pelfrey, Douglas (Sarah) Greenlee, Christina (Tony) Hamrick, John Stuart, Charles MacDonald, Kathryn (Jason) Sides, Dr. Rosemary (Stephen) Sifford, Joanna (Eric) Wilson, Wesley Bowen, Krista Moore, Warren Moore (April) and Eric Williams; five step-grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 6:00 p. m. to 8:00 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at Mizpah Moravian Church, Rural Hall, NC, burial will follow in Wolff's Graveyard. The family requests in lieu of lowers donations be made in memory of Walter Bowen to Brenner Children's Hospital, Office of Development, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1021.
