FREDERICK W. GEHRER FRED W. GEHRER A.K.A. McGruff, born September 15, 1921 in San Antonio and passed from this life to eternity on August 14, 2012.

He served in the United States Army and was the oldest member of the American Legion Post 36. Fred worked for Southern Pacific and retired after 42 years.

Fred was President of the National Association of Veteran Railway Employees Unit 64 from 1984-2010. He organized the Eastside Toastmasters in 1988. Fred also was a certified presenter for Operation Lifesaver. Fred was an elder at Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In 2004, he was inducted into the El Paso Senior Hall of Fame. Member of the Mayor's Advisory Board, El Paso Police Advisory Board and the El Paso Sheriff's Advisory Board.

For the last 21 years Fred has been Volunteer Director of the McGruff Crime Dog program in collaboration with the El Paso Police Department. His favorite saying was "Take a Bite Out of Crime."

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, three daughters, and three grandchildren.
