Mel was born in St. Petersburg Florida to Ishmael and Audrey Colman on Christmas day in 1937. He was the oldest son with a younger brother, Hubert and a younger sister Judith. He married Roberta Louise O'Donnell in 1957 and there were 4 children born of that marriage. Timothy Patrick, Christopher Alan, Tracy Lynne (Cannon) and Steven Michael. Mel married Lynn Logsdon in 1975 and remained married until his death in 2002.
Mel was the former Chief of Police of Winter Park Florida and then was appointed Sheriff Of Orange County Florida by Governor Reuben Askew. He became the youngest Sheriff of one of the largest counties in Florida. He went on to win one election and retired from the Sheriff's department in 1980 after losing the election. He remained in public service as a private investigator and expert witness. He returned to the Sheriff's department to work on a few projects prior to his death. Mel passed away on Dec. 22, 2002 of a stroke, he was also battling lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Ishmael Ethan Colman (Ish). He is survived by his wife, his four children, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren at the time of his death.
